Today in class we went to the Amon G. Carter museum to observe their collection of nature paintings. Sadly, a large part of the museum was under construction and most of the nature landscapes they are known for were in storage. Although this was disappointing their were still a lot of beautiful paintings. Even though a lot of the paintings were not specifically landscapes a majority of them contained scenes set in nature. Their were paintings with farms and fields in the backgrounds. Some of my personal favorites were some more abstract pieces of art. They had an installation set up called Plexus no. 34 that was made up of a bunch of different pieces of string. The strings were the color of the rainbow and were stretched from one wall to the top of another so you could walk under them, and so that the light in the room shone through them. This installation was specially created for this space and played off of the architecture of the building. What I loved about this piece was that depending on where you stood it could look completely different. Sometimes you could see all the colors of the rainbow, and sometimes just one. The artist was commenting on the complexities of life and connections everything has. He also was drawing attention to everyday beauty and asking observes to stop and just appreciate the beauty in the world. Even though this excursion did not go as planned I still got to take some time to observe some beautiful pieces of work that were different and unique.
